Fungus 53 mentioned the Soapbox Landro-Lounge : Mar 9, 01:16 PM

I was innocently minding my own business today, installing solaris 10 (nevada build 27) on vmware so I could start learning how to functionally use zfs.... -- anyway,...

I was listening to Fungus 53 from xmradio online when the announcer leads in with ... "if any of you are in the vicinity of Wilmington, NC"... Ok, you've got my attention. He continues, "check out this next band tonight at the Soapbox Landro-Lounge"... Ok, now you've really got my attention.

Apparently, a band called "Good Clean Fun" is playing at my beloved Soapbox tonight -- the song Fungus 53 played was "Between Christian Rock and a Hard Place".

Don't be fooled, this isn't Christian Rock, but I don't think I'll be trekking to the Soapbox tonight.

Finally, a New Podcast : Jan 26, 03:52 PM

I staretd podcasting on this site in October of 2004, but it has been well over a year since my last show. Sorry.

I recorded this podcast while I was stuck in traffic on I-85 near Concord, NC. What can I say? The radio was boring and I really like myself, so I decided to just go ahead and give into the temptation to talk to myself for 10 minutes or so while I recorded this podcast for you. I phoned this one into my voice mail, but I have recorded another show that I may post up later this week that I recorded with my laptop riding shotgun beside me.

As best I remember, in this show I talked about the new NBC show “My Name is Earl” starring Jason Lee. This is probably my favorite new show this season. It might have something to do with the fact that I have watched Jason Lee in every Kevin Smith movie since Mallrats. But let’s be honest — what keeps me coming back to this show is the writing — it’s one of the most well-written and genuinely funny shows on TV. The show has now moved to Thursday nights.

I also talked about the Bob Edwards Show on XM Radio. Bob Edwards was the former host of Morning Edition on NPR, but was left the show after nearly 25 years on the job when the morons at NPR decided that they wanted to use their new west-coast facility to bring in a dual-anchor re-design for the show. Bob was kept on with some made up title like “senior correspondent”, but Bob knew he wasn’t going to be in that hole for long. He left NPR to go solo on XM radio’s public radio format channel, XMPR (133). Now “The Bob Edwards Show” leaves him free to interview anyone that he likes and run the show just the way he sees fit. Bob is a brilliant guy and I really love the new show much more than his work on NPR.

See you next podcast.

Podcastercon 2006 : Jan 11, 10:08 AM

I managed to drag Lee to Podcastercon in Chapel Hill last weekend. I really enjoyed the excellent Triangle Blogger’s Conference I attended in February 2005 (on SWSRN’s birthday no less). I had also (to a slightly lesser extent) the ConvergeSouth event in Greensboro later in 2005.

I was excited about the potential of Podcastercon, especially allowing Lee to see David Warlick and his session on podcasting in education. The event was well attended and I ran into several people I had met before (like Anton, Warlick and the liberal that always makes me smile, Will R..

Maybe I just wasn’t in the mood for a conference on Saturday, but I felt like the sessions were dragging. We went to the advanced podcasting session first, but I thought that far too little attention was paid to content, with the discussion instead revolving around ebay and how to build a pop screen out of embroidery hoops and “clean” pantyhose. Lee thought they were talking over his head while I thought they were talking “out” of some other region of the body.

After lunch we went to Warlick’s education session, and while it was pretty good, the long session times (2 and a half hours!!! Who thought of this?) we were drained. Have a look at this photo from Brian Russell. Notice the look of “What the *%#X are you talking about” on my face (upper left) and Lee (big hair).

In closing, I must admit that seeing the guys from Attack of the Nerds was great. (Check out their blog) I’m guessing they are 12 or 13 years old, and Lee overheard the best quote of the day—it was from one of their mom’s. After the opening session, everyone was leaving to go the next event. The mom grabbed her son by the elbow and said something along the lines of “You two stay together at all times! I mean it! Don’t even go to the bathroom alone! There are some freaky people here!!!” A 7 hour drive to hang out with old nerds, $100. Having your mom call you out in public while you (and everyone around you) is wearing a nametag made from an old floppy disk—priceless.
